Library Classroom Curriculum
 
Students will also attend Library Class on a  weekly basis.  Our library and information skills curriculum introduces students to library uses and procedures, technological resources, a variety of genres of literature, and steps in the research process. Students learn how to access, evaluate, organize and present information.  Ultimately our goal is to have students be efficient and effective users of information. 
 
The following is a brief overview of the information skills curriculum at each grade level:
 

Grade 1: 

 

·        Characteristics of nonfiction

·        Identification of author and illustrator

·        Parts of a Book: Title, Author, Illustrator

·        Research Process:      Using sources (1 book and 1 video), taking notes (research grid- 4 questions developed by teacher),  and creating a project (writing one fact)

 

 

Grade 2:

·        Parts of a book:  Title, Author, Illustrator, Publisher

·        Card Catalog Searches:  Author, Title, Subject to locate sources

·        Research Process:  Brainstorming and Choosing a topic, Using sources (book), Taking notes (research grid- 7 questions developed by teacher—topic chosen from options given by teacher), Creating project (illustration and 3 facts with oral presentation)

 

Grade 3:

·        Card Catalog Searches:  Author, Title, Subject to locate sources

·        Sources:  Encyclopedias (Guidewords and Entries)

·        Research Process:  Choosing a topic (self-chosen from theme, i.e. Countries) , Taking notes (research grid), Creating project

·        Identification of author and illustrator

·        Introduction to Internet Safety

·        Introduction to Table of Contents and Index

 

Grade 4:

 

·        Sources:  Encyclopedia Review, Intro to Atlas

·        Parts of a Title Page (Title, Author, Publisher, Place of Publication, Copyright Date)

·        Creating a Works Cited Page (for book sources)

·        Identification and Use of the Six Steps in the Research Process: Define the Information Problem, Selecting Sources, Locating Sources, Organizing Information, Presenting Information, Evaluating Work

 

 

 

 

Grade 5:

·        Table of Contents and Index Review

·        Encyclopedia:  Headings/Subheadings, Sees/See Alsos

·        Sources:  Print:  Almanac, Atlas, Encyclopedia, Record Book

·        Sources:  Online:  Subject Directories, Search Engines, Subscription Databases (focus on Grolier Online Encyclopedia, PowerLibrary Sources)

·        Web Site Evaluation (Relevancy, Appropriateness, Detail, Currency, Authority, Bias)

·        Research Project using the Six Steps in the Research Process
