Band - Mr. Olson
Students in these classes participate in the process of preparing music for concert performances through the school year. Students meet during school hours as a large ensemble once every 6 days. In addition to that each student is scheduled for a small group lesson that also occurs during the 6-day cycle. There are opportunities for the ensembles to perform in multiple concerts each year.
Chorus - Mrs. Rothman
Students meet and rehearse during the school day according to their schedules. These are performance elective classes that rehearse in preparation for a minimum of 2 evening concerts a year. School assemblies and performances out in the community are also scheduled throughout the school year
Orchestra- Mr. Wunder
Participating students rehearse weekly in a large ensemble by grade level. They also attend weekly half-hour small group lessons on violin, viola, and cello. Two major concerts are given throughout the year, as well as extra performance opportunities throughout the community.
Drama Club - Mrs. Rothman & Mrs. BlocksomMembership based upon auditioning and earning a part in the school play, or being appointed a member of the stage crew. The number of students varies each year based upon the script. Auditions are held in late November and early December. Students meet and rehearse 2 days a week after school until 4:30 January through February. Performances are the first weekend in March
Jazz Jags and Jazz Cats - Mr. Selfridge
The Jazz Jaguars is an auditioned ensemble that is limited to the following instrumentation: 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 5 trumpets, and piano, bass, guitar, drums. The Jazz Jaguars rehearse every Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 7:00pm. They perform several concerts a year at Garnet Valley, in addition to traveling to several jazz festivals each year in the Delaware County area.
The Jazz Cats is a second jazz ensemble that does not require an audition to join, and is open to any student in middle school band. The purpose of the Jazz Cats is to teach students the basics of jazz style, literature, and improvisation. The Jazz Cats rehearse every Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 7:00pm. The Jazz Cats perform several concerts each year, including the Garnet Valley Jazz Festival.
All ability levels are welcome. Students will have the chance to play all the different recorders and perform in the Winter and Spring concerts. Recorder Ensemble meets Friday's after school until 3:30pm.
Select Chorus is made up of an elite group of 12-20 sixth graders. Any student currently in Sixth Grade Chorus is welcome to try out. Students will experience a challenging repertoire of music. Practices are held either Wednesday or Thursday after school from 2:30-3:30pm
Show Choir - Mrs. Rothman
This group is comprised of 7th and 8th graders who audition for participation in this choral group. Prerequisite: must be a member of his/her grade level chorus.
Students meet and rehearse for 90 minutes on Thursday nights. Additional rehearsals are after school and in the evening as we approach the concert season. These are performance elective classes that rehearse in preparation for a minimum of 2 evening concerts a year. School assemblies and performances out in the community are also scheduled throughout the school year.
Small Ensemble - Mr. Olson
(Flute, Brass, Woodwind, or Percussion)
The small ensembles offer MS students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade the opportunity to explore musical experiences in a small group setting. Ensembles meet once/week for an after school rehearsal and perform a minimum of one concert in the spring of each school year. Extra performances are scheduled at the discretion of the ensemble director. The Flute Ensemble performs every year. The Brass Woodwind, and Percussion Ensembles are held on a 3-year rotation. There is no audition requirement for any of these ensembles
Symphonic Band - Mr. Olson
This ensemble is formed each year by an audition process. The group is open to students who are members of the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade bands. Audition information and materials are made available in a timely fashion prior to the actual audition period. Rehearsals are held after school once/week and a minimum of 1 concert will be scheduled each year. The music performed in these ensembles will selected with the idea of challenging the students and exposing them to new concepts and techniques in the area of concert band literature.
