MIDDLE SCHOOL
WORLD LANGUAGES

The World Language program consists of an exploratory sixth grade course in German, French, and Spanish. Students are exposed to basic communication in the target language and culture. Students meet once per six-day cycle on a rotating basis throughout the year. Topics include greetings, colors, numbers, calendar, and significant cultural celebrations. The sixth grade curriculum culminates with the students' choice of language to study throughout both 7th and 8th grade.

The 7th and 8th grade language curriculum is equivalent to the first year of world language study at the high school. Students meet on a rotating three-day schedule throughout the two years. The four components of language study are emphasized: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The department utilizes the Holt, Reinhart, and Winston Come Along series, which includes textbook, audio, video, and a variety of interactive modalities. The 7th grade program covers the first three units, while the 8th grade curriculum focuses on units four to six.
