Extracurricular Activities (Clubs) Art Club - Mr. Moyer & Mr. Wiggins Art Club meets Wednesday until 3:45pm. Film and Photo Club meets Thursdays until 3:45pm. Open to all middle school students, this club gives students an opportunity to create projects that use a variety of mediums. Art Club meets once a week after school. Students get the opportunity to showcase their talents in sculpture, drawing, painting, and many other mediums. Board Games Club - Mrs. Kelly Board Games meets on Thursdays until 3:30 This club is open to all students who would like to learn chess and various board games and participate in friendly competitions with their peers. Communications Club - Mr. Amoss This club, open to all students, is responsible for the Middle School GVMS-TV announcements. Students meet every morning to prepare and broadcast that day's news. Cross Country - Mr. Egleston & Ms. Hasel Drama Club - Mrs. Rothman & Mrs. Blocksom www.garnetvalleyschools.com/gvms/drama Rehearsals will on Wednesday and Thursday (Jan.-March) until 4:30pm in the MS Auditorium. Membership based upon auditioning and earning a part in the school play, or being appointed a member of the stage crew. The number of students varies each year based upon the script. Auditions are held in late November and early December. Students meet and rehearse 2 days a week after school until 4:30 January through February. Performances are the first weekend in March. Foreign Language - Miss Tenaglia Foreign Language Club meets on Wednesdays until 3:15 We host the annual International Night in March and various cultural activities throughout the year like Oktoberfest, cinco de mayo, and Mardi Gras. Involvement varies with each activity. Film and Photo Club - Mr. Moyer Film and Photo Club meets Thursdays until 3:45 Intramural Swimming Club - Mrs. Cox Library Club - Miss Gress www.garnetvalleyschools.com/gvms/library Library Club meets on Tuesdays until 3:15pm. We read and talk about books while promoting school-wide reading initiatives such as the Pennsylvania Young Readers' Choice Award program. We also play a lot of games, help take care of the library, read to the Concord students, and eat a lot of snacks! For more information, click on "Library" and check out the calendar. Math Club - Mrs. Manno Mathcounts meets on Wednesdays until 3:30pm. Math Club is comprised of two areas: Mathcounts, a group of 8 students identified by school-wide testing offered in September and October, and then Math Club, which is open to all students. Mathcounts meets on Wednesdays from Sept to March. Math Club will meet Wednesdays in April and May, and end when the spring sports end. Newspaper Club - Ms. Subach & Ms. Gombar Newspaper Club meets on Wednesdays from 2:30-3:30 in Rm. 121. Our members write articles for the school newspaper, the Garnet Gazette. Students conduct interviews, surveys, and polls to create their articles. Students write about various topics, including school events, teachers, sports, entertainment and club activities within the school. Newspaper Club meets on Thursdays 2:30-3:30 in room 210. Outdoor Club - Mrs. Tracewell & Mr. Grande www.garnetvalleyschools.com/gvms/outdoorclub This intramural activity, opened to students in all grades, offers four ski trips to the students during the months of January and February. Pep Club - Mrs. Xanthopoulos and Mr. Wiggins Pep Club meets Tuesdays after shool in the guidance office until 3:15. This club is open to all middle school students. Pep Club promotes "school spirit". Students plan PEP rallies, build the middle school homecoming float, and plan other school spirit activities throughout the year. Science Olympiad - Mr. Grande and Mr. Amos Science Olympiad Website The Science Olympiad Team will be comprised of fifteen students. Team members will compete on a regional level and possibly a national level. Interested students will be selected upon application review. The team will meet primarily on Thursdays with additional meetings as the competition date approaches. Please visit the website above for more information. Early Act Service Club - Mrs. Kuderka & Mrs. Hagerty Mrs. Kuderka: 610-579-5194 Service Club meets on Tuesdays until 3:30pm. Service Club members plan activities on campus, run recycling of paper and travel to schools and community places off campus to help and assist others as needed. Soccer Club - Mrs. Wagner October 29 to November 15 Stage Crew Club - Mr. Grande This club, open to all students, teaches students "behind the scene" skills. This club helps with school functions such as pep rallies and concerts. This club meets at varying times throughout the year to prepare for upcoming events. Student Council - Mr. Pease Student Council meets by grade level at 7:20 AM: 8th gr. - Tuesday, 7th gr - Wednesday, 6th gr. - Thursday. This is open to all middle school students. Student Council organizes and sponsors activities to benefit the middle school students such as dances, fund-raisers and contests. Meetings are held daily during homebase and occasionally after school. Student Store - Mrs. Kuderka School Store will run at least three days per 6 day cycle during student lunch periods. Students are responsible for ordering items to sell for school store, taking inventory, dealing with money, depositing money, paying bills, and developing appropriate social skills that relate to retail. Study Skills Club - Mrs. Trefz & Mrs. Uhrig Study Skills Club meets Wednesdays after school in the Library until 3:15pm. This after school club is designed to teach students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade a variety of study strategies to promote active learning. Students will be given a study skills folder and handouts and will be encouraged to apply these concepts to their current academic work. Yearbook Club - Ms. Tenaglia Yearbook club meets on Thursdays until 3:15 in room 132 Meeting once a week and open to all middle school students, this club publishes a yearly book for students. This club is responsible for taking pictures at all activities, organizing, typing, and assembling the yearbook. Robotics - Mrs. Kunze & Miss Brown Robotics Club brings together students who want to practice their teamwork, designing, problems solving, and computing skills while working with robots. Students will have the opportunity to learn basic robotics, compete on tasks, and propose new projects. Primarily we build and program Lego Mindstorm NXT robots, but students can learn other kinds of robotics as well. When the team is trained, we will try out for the First Lego League. Robotics Cub meets on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30 to 4 pm. Open to 6th-8th grade. Limit 14 students per session. Reading Olympics - Mrs. Stec & Mrs. Cunningham Reading Olympics is a unique opportunity for students that love to read and discuss literature. We will meet some mornings as well after school to discuss and assign books. Students will read on their own and formulate questions that we will use for a practice round. The “team” will compete against other 6-8 grade teams in Delaware County at a culminating “Olympics” at the end of the year. Many books read for Reading Olympics can be used for independent reading for English classes throughout the year. |
