We are aware of a great deal of activity on social media regarding rumored abductions in our area. As a result, our Director of Safety and Security communicated with the Pennsylvania State Police Department around 11:30AM today and learned that on Wednesday October 20, 2021 there was a reported attempted abduction at the Sunoco Station located at the intersection of Routes 202 and 1 in Chadds Ford. The victim contacted the Pennsylvania State Police and there is an ongoing investigation.

USPS and Tax Payment Processing Delays

It has come to our attention that there have been delays with the United States Postal Service and/or processing of the tax payments at the TD Bank lockbox. The delays will cause some real estate tax payments to be processed after the August 31, 2021 discount period deadline. The discount period will be honored for all payments postmarked August 31, 2021, or earlier, regardless of delays in delivery time. We are sorry for this inconvenience.

Governor Wolf held a press conference announcing a masking mandate for all Pennsylvania K-12 schools and childcare centers. The order, issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, goes into effect next Tuesday, September 7th, and remains in place until the Acting Secretary of Health determines the public health risk is sufficiently reduced so that face coverings are no longer necessary.

Act 66 of 2021

On June 30, Governor Tom Wolf signed Act 66 of 2021 (Act 66) into law. Act 66 permits students that were enrolled during the 2020-21 school year to repeat their grade level in an effort to make up for any lost educational opportunities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, even if the student met the requirements to be promoted to the next grade level. Based on this Act, parents/guardians and students, at or over the age of 18, have until July 15, 2021, to elect to have their child or themselves repeat a grade level for the 2021-22 school year.

The final budget requires a property tax millage rate of 18.4414 (Bethel: 18.6471) mills, an increase of 0.00% over the current year; this represents the lowest Garnet Valley School District tax increase in over 20 years.

GVMS Reading Olympics Team Earns Blue Ribbon

The GVMS 2020-2021 Reading Olympics team competed on Monday, May 10th for the annual DCIU Reading Olympics competition. This was a virtual event with each Olympian zooming in from their home. We were able to have two teams compete in this event. The students prepared by reading several books that covered several genres. After two hours of competing and answering 50 questions, both teams earned several blue ribbons.

Last evening the Board approved the delayed start time initiative 8 to 1. The Board’s approval will change the high school start time by an hour from 7:35 to 8:35, the middle school by 30 minutes from 7:30 to 8:00, and the elementary schools by 15 minutes from 8:55 to 9:10. End times will be as follows: high school at 2:35, middle school at 2:54, and the elementary schools at 3:30. This change will occur at the start of the 2021–2022 school year.
