Garnet Valley High School’s Response to COVID-19

In March of 2020, Garnet Valley moved quickly to virtual learning.  Students fully engaged in their classes daily, and the majority of the academic program was asynchronous.  The rigor of our classes was not compromised and students continued to receive numeric final grades.

In 2020-21, students were given the option to attend classes in person or virtually.  Instruction was delivered synchronously.  The rigor of our classes remained the same for all students whether the student attended class in-person or virtually.

Homeless Assistance Act
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act can provide school stability for your child if you do not have a permanent home and are:

  1. Staying with friends or family because you lost housing.

  2. Living in a shelter, including transitional programs.

  3. Staying in motels because you cannot get your own home.

  4. Living on the streets, in a car, van, tent or other nonpermanent structure.

As an eligible student you have the right to:

  1. Receive a free, appropriate public education.

  2. Enroll in a school immediately, even if lacking documents normally required for enrollment.

  3. Enroll in school or continue attending your school of origin (the school you attended when permanently housed or the school in which you were last enrolled.) if that is your preference and is feasible.

  4. Receive transportation to and from school origin if you request this.

  5. Receive education services comparable to those provided to other students, according to your needs as a student.

If you find yourself in this situation, please contact Kristen Smeins, Garnet Valley School District Homeless Liaison, at smeink@garnetvalley.org
