Frequently Asked Questions

The following FAQ’s are provided by the Garnet Valley School District. Please refer all questions regarding school-issued technology to Dr. Samuel Mormando, Director of Technology for the Garnet Valley School District.

  • No, if any device stops working because of a hardware or software issue it will be replaced by the district at no cost.

  • No, device insurance is completely optional for both staff and students. Without insurance, families are responsible for the cost of any damage to district-owned technology, just like they would be for textbooks or classroom equipment.

Offering insurance gives families a choice. It's a proactive, cost-effective option that helps avoid unexpected repair bills while supporting the district’s responsibility to manage resources wisely.

  • Accidental insurance covers common incidents like drops, spills, cracked screens, and broken keyboards—anything that makes the device unusable and requires a full replacement. It does not cover intentional damage, neglect, or abuse.

Students and staff are expected to care for their district-issued devices. If a device is damaged or not working, they must report it to the school’s technology support team. Screens are especially fragile, and screen damage usually requires full device replacement.

District-issued devices are the property of the school district. All users and their parents/guardians should be familiar with these key School Board Policies:

    • 📄 101: Philosophy of Education/Mission Statement

    • 📄 220: Student Expression and Posting Materials

    • 📄 224: Care of School Property

    • 📄 249: Bullying and Cyberbullying

    • 📄 814: Copyright Material

    • 📄 815: Acceptable Use

    • 📄 816: Use of Livestream Video

  • Garnet Valley is committed to helping students build a healthy, balanced relationship with technology. Our approach combines education, digital safeguards, and strong partnerships with families to support responsible use of district-owned devices.

    Here’s how we do that:

    • Digital Citizenship Education
We use Common Sense Media’s award-winning Digital Citizenship curriculum to teach students how to safely and responsibly navigate the digital world. Garnet Valley is proud to be a Certified Common Sense School District, a recognition given to districts that make digital citizenship a core part of their culture.

    • Parent Partnerships
We work closely with families to create a safe and supportive digital environment. Through our partnership with Family Zone, parents can access a dedicated hub with helpful articles, videos, and courses about managing technology at home.

    • Smart Content Filtering
To help students stay focused and safe online, we use industry-leading content filters:

      • On-campus: Fortinet filters student internet access using trusted, certified security tools.

      • Off-campus: Jamf Safe Internet extends protection when students use their devices at home, helping maintain consistent digital boundaries no matter where learning takes place.

By blending education with thoughtful safeguards, we help students explore the digital world responsibly—at school and at home.

  • No, students are expected to return their school-issued laptops when they graduate. However, they will have the option to purchase their device. The purchase price will reflect current market value and will be shared with students and families ahead of time.

  • If your device is damaged or not working properly, report it right away to your school’s Technology Support Specialist.

Staff and students should not try to fix the issue themselves or take the device to an outside repair service. All school-issued devices must be serviced through the district.

  • There is no limit. If you purchase device insurance, you can submit unlimited claims per year.

If your device is replaced, the new device will automatically be covered under the same insurance plan.
